Then it would not be the same movie at all. It is a Chinese film. It was an
intentional choice to make a Chinese film, perhaps because it enables the
audience to buy into the movie's concept.
Would Pagliacci be a better opera if in English to make it easier for
Americans? Would Tonio's cry, "Ridi, pagliacco" sound better if it were "I am a
clown?" Hardly. The choice of language/dialect is essential.
All operas in America are subtitled, have been for many years, the last holdout
being the NY Met two/three years ago. Stay away! Subtitles are talking over
the world!
By the way, significant parts of the movie Traffic are also subtitled.
