Tyler my husband is Arabic and can turn you on to lots of music. Mostly
Jordanian and Saudi, though.

NJC here, but I just got to share this wonderful new
music I've just discovered...
Did anyone on this list catch the radio program
'Afropop Worldwide' on NPR on Feb 16th? I heard only
a portion-I was driving to dinner (a great noodle
place in Chicago's Chinatown) and had it on in the
car. they were playing Eithiopian music, and the
selections I heard were fabulous! Imagine if you can
equal parts psychedelic, '70's James Brown/Funkadelic
funk and middle eastern music blended together. The
performer's name was Mahmoud Ahmed, and after some
searching, managed to aquire a couple of discs on
Saturday. I'm loving this stuff! There's a series of
discs released by the French label Buda Musique titled
"Eithiopiques". I picked up vol. 3, which is a
compilation of various artists, and vol. 6, which is a
Mahmoud Ahmed lp originally released in 1973. Both are
great, and both are a delicious blend of soul and
middle eastern sounds. Extensive liner notes tell the
history of Eithiopian pop,and fascinating it is. too
much to go into here.
Has anyone else heard this stuff? Do you know where i
can get more of it?
Nothng about Joni in this post, but I get the feeling
there's a lot of people on this list with broad tastes
in music, and thought you might find this interesting.
