Which I guess is why I said something along the lines of "next to
impossible" rather than "100% impossible", because, well, these
things *do* happen, and I wasn't willing to state the old 100%
thing, 'cos something like this always comes along and sits one
back on one's arse. :-) However things like this are *very* unlikely
to happen, and my personal opinion is that you got unlukcy in this
case.
I just reacted a bit to the overwhelming negative tone of the
original e-mail because I'd always had perfectly good experiences
with ICQ under both NT and 2000.
And no, I don't think you're nuts :) It's just that the original
e-mail implied a certain cause and effect that didn't quite make
to me as a hardcore techie!
However, I do have to say this. NT and 2000 *are* astonishingly similar
down at the core components underneath. MS-DOS, Windows 95,98,ME are
a closely related family, as are NT 3.51, 4.0 and Win 2000. NT and 2000
have a lot of built-in mechanisms that should stop software such as
ICQ being able to lunch the whole machine in the manner you experienced.
95 et. al. do not.
