Thanks all for some fascinating ideas about what or
who this fine song is about. I had assumed (and I
thought I had read somewhere) that it was about people
Joni knew in L.A. - but the little grey cells can't
remember any more than that now.

The Edith Piaf connection seems odd to me. Has Joni 
ever mentioned an interest in Piaf's life or singing?
