A large grey rectangle probably means that:-
a) you have java disabled in your browser
b) you have a defective java interpreter
c) the java applet is taking a long time to load, for
instance if your connection is slow.
Check therefore that Java is on in your browser
Netscape: Edit->Preferences, advanced tab or tree foldout
IE: Er, I can't remember. It's more than likely to be on
anyway in IE, because it looks hard to turn off!!!
