I've just watched the delayed coverage - no real surprises, although I did
think Ang Lee might win best Director. But I guess when you've got two
nominations, you've got a better chance!
The best (and somewhat emotional) moment for me was hearing Russell Crowe
(now you know what a "kiwi" accent is!) dedicate his award to his
grandfather, and his uncle, David William Crowe. I knew Dave well - he was
President of my cricket club for years - and I've never met a nicer, more
generous man - he always had time for a chat. His funeral last year was
testament to the great respect he received - the large hall at the Auckland
Cricket Association was overflowing with people wishing to pay their
respects. His ashes were scattered on our club cricket grounds, where I go
at least twice a week over summer, and a bench has been erected in his
memory, overlooking the grounds. I'm sure he was watching, and is immensely
proud of his nephew's achievements.
On a lighter note, I thought Steve Martin was great - I prefer him to Billy
Crystal anyway - and I loved Julia's speech. Although I thought she might
have mentioned Erin Brokovich!
