When Joni first unveiled her Both Sides Now, heart on her sleeve,
self-portrait it didn't take us long to figure out the references to "Case
of You." There was the glass of wine, the blue TV screen light and there
was even the cartoon coaster on the bar. When she showed the painting here
in L.A. I peered at that coaster on three different occasions, trying to
discern what she scribbled on it. Straight on it looked like a rudimentary
fence with a long-stemmed rose doodled off to one side. My old friend Sue
came into town tonight to visit for a few days. She is the one I've
mentioned who introduced me to Joni's music (the cover versions) back in
'66. I unfurled my set of BSN lithos for her tonight and she immediately
said "there's the map of Canada on the cartoon coaster." I said "where???"
So she turned the litho upside down and sure enough there are all the
Canadian provinces outlined. I asked how she figured that out and she said
"well, you have to look at it from the angle Joni was drawing it." Well,
duh! I don't know if anyone else has noticed the map but thought this was
cool and was glad Joni completed all the necessary detail in the painting.
