Doug Hopkins (who was the sole writer of "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out
About You") was actually the lead songwriter, founding member and
guitarist, but he was not the lead singer. He was kicked out of the
band on the eve of the release of their major label debut, "New
Miserable Experience" because of his alcoholism and unpredictable
behavior from major depression. He killed himself shortly after that.
He lived just long enough to hear his own songs become the huge hits
that propelled the band's success, without him. I was working at A&M
when all of this went down and there was a very sombre and heavy
atmosphere of guilt surrounding the people who turned their backs on him
because of his problem.

The band really struggled to create great songs after that first album
and folded after their third album.
