Stereo uses two speakers, left and right-with potentially different
sounds coming from each one. A 5.1 system has left and right
front speakers, a center speaker between them (good for
localizing movie dialogue), and left and right rear speakers.
Some concert videos are mixed using the rear speakers for
audience ambience, to try to recreate the concert experience
with the musicians in front, the other approach is to route
musical program through them-surrounding you with the band.
The point 1 refers to a subwoofer for handling the lower
bass frequencies. Placement isn't too important for a sub-
your ear isn't very sensitive to location.
Of course, you need a separate amplifier to drive each
speaker-all convieniently housed in a modern 5.1 receiver.
BTW- I have not yet heard a 5.1 system
BTW2 - I just found out that The Last Waltz is being mixed
for 5.1 for the coming dvd.
