All of this is IMHO, of course: Sure, Chinese Cafe is the standout song on
WTRF, but there are other songs that I remember enjoying when I first got the
album--Ladies Man, Moon at the Window, Man to Man (I love the way she sings
"I stick my nose up in the air) and You Dream Flat Tires, ("Are you telling
me this to tease me?" has such a sexy intonation!) I think the reason
the album doesn't fare well is that the songs you don't like, you really
don't like--Underneath the Streetlight comes to mind as the album's Dancin'
Clown. And I never really "got" Be Cool until I heard the version as it was
arranged all big and Las Vegasy at the BSN concert in Concord last year.
Still, it's Joni and for me, any Joni is better than no Joni at all.
