I've come to look at "Paprika Plains" in much the same
way as I look at any "epic song".  When you get down
to it, there's really not THAT much difference between
it and something like Genesis' "The Return of the
Giant Hogweed" from Nursery Cryme ... "The Telegraph
Road" from Dire Straits Love Over Gold ... "The Great
Gig In The Sky" from Dark Side.  

I think people get unnecessarily hung up on the "piano
concerto" feel to what is, in the end, an extended
solo section (or what Richard Thompson calls "an
instrumental excusion").  It certainly is a fantastic
bit of musical prosody, given the lyrical descriptions
in the opening of the song, and provides a great
melodic journey ending up where it begins.
