Carroll O'Connor & Jean Stapleton created one of the most memorable
couples in the history of TV. I've watched re-runs of 'All in the
Family' recently and marveled at the skill of these two remarkable
actors as they seemed to disappear into their characters. They played
off one another so beautifully. Archie & Edith Bunker started out as
cartoonish, exaggerated characters but as the series progressed and
the actors became more ensconced in their roles, the characters became
more & more human. They taught us a lot about ourselves and the world
around us. It's a pity that recent posts about gay bashing seem to
show that many have not learned the lessons that Archie & Edith showed
us. I myself got bonked on the head once and may have had worse
happen to me if I hadn't managed to get up off the ground & run away.
As it was, I had stitches in my head & felt kind of out of it for a
day or so. Anyway, I too have a special place in my heart for
Carroll O'Connor. I will miss him.

Jack Lemmon. What can you say about Jack Lemmon? He was the
consummate clown and a consummate actor. He could make us split our
sides laughing or bring tears to our eyes. Who can forget Daphne in
'Some Like It Hot' or Felix Unger in 'The Odd Couple' or his powerful
portrayal of the alcoholic in 'The Days of Wine & Roses'? I always
think of Jack Lemmon in relation to Walter Matthau and now they're
both gone. Both of them were favorites of mine for the greater part
of my 47 years. For me these weren't 'stars of yesteryear', these
were movie icons of my time. Now even 80s music is nostalgia. And
the earth keeps spinning and the sky forever rushing.....
