This didn't seem to go through first time........

Hi folks,
Long time no hear from me, I know - I've turned into a lurker it seems!
(oh the shame of it).....but there are a few threads I felt I just had
to briefly comment on.
Catherine The Wise said, on exposing young children to all kinds of
*unsuitable* films/videos :
" I've noticed this too and I find it, oh what the heck,
appalling as well. There's a reason why movies are
rated PG or PG13 or Adult Accompaniment or whatever
ratings are used from one country to the next. And
yet, so many of my kids' friends have seen stuff even
I wouldn't want to see. "
In the UK, there's talk of the ratings system being abolished
altogether, which rightly or wrongly, pretty much horrifies me. As a
film freak, and someone who watches and reviews examples of every
type/genre around both past and present - from Stuart Little to The
Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and everything besides - any abolition of
regulatory guidlines as to the suitability of a film's subject matter
and content seems like yet another nail in the coffin of common sense,
never mind sanity.
Then again, several recent movies have baffled me with their rating, for
instance the delightful Family Man with Nic Cage is a 15 certificate,
yet give or take a few mild references to sexual relationships there is
nothing that strikes me as warranting a rating higher than 12. There are
other cases I've come across too, usually of the opposite nature, where
the film perhaps demanded the higher certificate. Yet, despite these
anomalies, the current system at least gives people an idea of what to
expect, and oftentimes adults need to know for their own sakes as much
as minors. It leads into censorship, one could say, but doing away with
any form of ratings is surely not the way to go.
Jimmy, I was laughing myself silly at your wonderful recollection of the
multiplex experience. It's not like it used to be, that's for sure. I go
about once every 2 years, and always leave swearing I'll never go back
again. I don't know how I feel about the POTA remake, as the original is
one of my all-time favourites. I hope they haven't tried to imitate it.
Anne, I'm so saddened to hear of the bad news, but remain hopeful that
things will be okay. You're clearly a very strong person, so I don't
think that hope is misplaced.
Azeem's nonplussed reaction to the mention of "Beyonce" was, if you'll
forgive me Azeem, quite amusing, and the subsequent praise/dismissal of
her and Destiny's Child's talents proves that it really does take all
sorts! Me? I loved The Writing's On The Wall (especially Bug A Boo, what
a track!), but the new stuff leaves me cold. In fact, worse than cold, I
just don't get it, and the overtly in-your-face sexuality at the expense
of the tunes they had before just seems a tad too far, attractive as the
girls clearly are. Sass is fine, but you gotta have the songs to back it
up, else it feels like a peep show or something!
I continue to marvel at the rate of knots at which dear Colin continues
to post (I was wondering what those numbers were myself!), marvel at
Brenda's incredible knowledge of the music industry, and wish I had more
to say about Joni's work these days. I'm lost in music almost more than
ever once again, but too many of the acts I have been listening to would
probably draw blank expressions....
Slipstreaming away,
Jason.
