Jo holds a pick between her thumb and index finger and this frees up her
other fingers to do some individual string plucking along with the
strumming. I can't recall her ever *not* having a pick. She pays attention
to her nails and tries to keep them strong. She did tell a story once about
gluing on artificial nails right before a gig. Apparently she started
playing a little too vigorously and one of the fake nails popped off, right
into the lap of an audience member. She said the guy was really cool about
it, kind of pretended it didn't happen, and the show went on.
