I don't think it's so much about gullibility - although some people
obviously are. I think this is more just about brand awareness. If you're
looking to buy something you've never bought before, you're more likely to
go with something you've heard of, that a completely unknown product.

Obviously if you're buying an expensive product like a camera, then an
intelligent person is going to do some background on it first. But if
you're talking about a few dollars, then maybe that advertising
"brain-washing" might just sink into the subconscious enough to influence
your choice of product.
