Sleeves and Covers

Here's something that has baffled me more than the penis on the Hejira cover:
On the cover of Blue, we see Joni's face in a kind of silhouette.  There is 
something odd near her chin and I have never been able to see what this is.  
Is it a microphone?  A telephone?  A (former) friend told me he thought it 
looked like she was drooling or slobbering.  Does anyone know?
