As root I can 'su mysql'. I've never actually done that before, have not had a reason until now. I did try to create a test file in /tmp and it gave a message of "Permission denied". I'd think that alone is odd, shouldn't mysql as a user be able to write to /tmp? This may be related to the problem? Thanks!
