However, it is said “better late than never”. A little reminder: a set of about 5 joscommandos initially visited Papauwa in his home sometime in 2010 and sent in a report on his state of health. Thereafter, I made a follow up visit and incidentally met with him at the location where he was being attended to on account of a stroke he suffered. Well, my report on that visit gave rise to a request at the time for funds to be raised to support his family with his care. Thanks to those who responded immediately. A good number of us still kept in touch with the family until his demise in March this year. Immediately the news got to us, we all agreed to be part of the burial programme and to solicit funds to assist the family with the burial as a way of appreciating a man who touched our lives in his own way. Thanks be to God, on the 8th April, 2012, an advance team of commandos made the trip to Ihechiowa – arochukwu, arochukwu LGA, Abia State. We arrived the community at about 10pm and I tell you the trip was one laden with lots of fun and laughter. The all night ceremony was even more eventful as commandos took center stage from about 2pm till the dawn enjoying full blast of all genre of music from Dr Sogbeyes vehicle as the music group invited took an early break. Not to worry, questions were asked and the response was simple. These are Papa Uwas other children. By the way, the advance party was made up of Dr. Sogbeye George ’82, Mrs Comfort Bernard Willis ’82, dr edem eniang ’84 and your’s truly. Suya suffer well well with enough cold beer that could not be exhausted. The next day, some other joscommandos arrived for the service and interment. These include Dr. (Kalu Ochu) John Chukwu ’82, Cdr & Mrs Felix Ohaeri ’83, Mr Donatus Ejiofor ’83 (who came in from the UK) Mr and Mrs Victor Onwudinjo ( Emeka Onyekwelu) ’82. During the service, a little slot was given for joscommandos to say something about the man, Elder Eke Uwakwe. Dr Sogbeye George took charge of this and at the end of his brief, we sang the command special… Oh walk, walk, walking in the light.. and closed it with our version.. Oh Uwakwe Uwakwe Uwakwe walking in the light…. This was the highpoint of the service. Thereafter, the interment took place with the FRSC team doing justice with the siren blaring as he was laid to rest in front of his home. Not forgetting too, that we were all colorfully attired in COJOSA branded t-shirts, face caps and pin ups. It was an all together a very wonderful experience and I so much wish that you were also able to attend. The family and indeed the whole Ihechiowa community felt the Joscommandos presence. Lest you begin to think I have forgotten, let me speak a little on finances. I want to personally and on behalf of us all thank all those who made contributions towards the successful burial of Late Elder EKE UWAKWE. Details of these have been communicated and updated by the coordinating Lagos Chapter since the funds were bpaid into the central account as agreed. I want to believe that the amount raised in support of the family is about #700 000 if not more. This is no mean achievement within short notice. I do know that many more would have loved to be part of it financially but I tell you, God will grant us all the wherewithal to be able to reach out when the need arises. Once more, thank you for all you have done and may the love of God enfold us all as we strive to build a united Command Jos Old Students Alumni.
