I think I will keep it simple: WMSPlugin will not only check for a minimum SVN revision of remotecontrol but also for a maximum revision. Whenever remotecontrol gets recompiled with a new SVN revision, wmsplugin has to be updated. I will replace console messages with a normal message window to inform the user about this incompatibility.

What do you think about this solution?

That would make the situation worse. What I wanted to say is that upwards compatibility is not so easy to guarantee. For josm I decided that we need to live with that fact and we use the auto-update and other mechanisms to work around.

The API version is a nice idea, but don't expect to much of it. There will nevertheless be trouble in the future - no reason to worry about :-)

As long as we can fix incompatibilites by a "Click Update" I don't have bigger problems with that.
