There might be a point here that I'm missing,

but it seems that `$(element).css('filter')` gives access to the
filter value specified in the stylesheet, whereas `$(element).css
('opacity')` (via. `$.attr(element.style, 'opacity')` ) does not...

...as demonstrated in the "patched" demo:
