I am quite sure that the same problems would occur with the last UI final release, as what occurs jquery.ui-1.6rc2 and jquery-1.2.6.js VS jquery.ui-1.6rc6 and jquery-1.3.1.js
Problems with backwards compatibility can make things become less popular fast.
