It's actually the UnixCrypt algorithm that only uses up to 8 characters.
You've got a couple of options:
- If using form based authentication, limit the input to 8 characters
- Create your own authentication service that does not use UnixCrypt. See

So if you enter more than 8 characters and the first 8 characters represent
the correct password, JRun should not accept the identification or at least
inform the reader that only passwords up to 8 characters are valid and
prompt the user again for the correct password.
