David, I had the same problem on 7.1 and wound up copying the binaries from a successful 6.2 install. But then, patch 26414 seems to install fine, which is apparently a complete install. Maybe give that a try; find it by searching the knowledge base at the support site. Hope that helps, BenG.
Funny, I did exactly what you did in terms of altering the script and eventually ran into checksum errors. I thought it was me.
