The pointbase database required by the samples server doesn't start correctly with JDK 1.4. We've found a work around and will be publishing a patch soon. In the mean time if you use 1.3 it will work properly. Another option is to comment out the pointbase service in the samples servers jrun.xml and start the DB's manually using the scripts from the <JRUN_HOME>/pointbase directory.
