It is quite possible to develop client/server applications without writing a single line of JavaScript. irt Async I/O, due to the syntactical limitations of JavaScript this can be very unwieldy, and admittedly its splitting hairs but not all I/O is asynchronous (Date, Math.random, etc...) so its a bit of a misnomer.
And its not "cognitive dissonance" in the way you are using it, but the lack thereof. There is nothing wrong with using new abstractions, as long as we're not abstracting sideways for no good reason.
