You should look at
http://benalman.com/projects/jquery-bbq-plugin/
It is a jquery plug in (2 actually) that will handle this for you.
There is the full BBQ plugin that is probably more than you need, but
is wonderful for more complex situations.
It is worth reading through to understand the complexities of what is
going on.

You should look into the hashChange plugin
http://benalman.com/projects/jquery-hashchange-plugin/
This will handle the cross-browser issues of the hashchange event.
