Okay, several people have requested information on this now. I currently
work for a web company (called Caput, http://www.caput.com) which have a
good amount of experience in high performance sites. We started by
making the Caput Web Chat which are currently in use at the largest
danish chat sites. This chat was written in C, but the next generation
of this product is written in java servlets and currently we have
reached a peak of 70 requests/sec on this chat without problems.
Unfortunately for most of you the sites currently running it is in
danish but of course you can still try it at http://chat.tv2.dk/chat or
for an overview http://chat.tv2.dk/chat/com.caput.chat.Login.roomList .
We have also created a few major sites using servlets.
http://www.stam.dk is running siis (http://www.siis.dk) which is servlet
based on the web side and http://www.under-uret.dk is also using
servlets. The last site is a community site with a slightly romantic
touch. Therefore it is one of the most visited sites in Denmark :-) A
sister company made these last two sites, so I haven't got any
performance stats on them, but I know the last one it heavily visited
and all of them are commercial.
We deploy servlets using the Jetty Web Server from Mortbay
(http://www.mortbay.com) which is 100 % pure java. Sometimes we use it
in conjunction with a traditionel apache because it seems to be rather
slow at serving plain files (gif's etc.). We use our own template
parsing system but we are currently seriously considering JSP for that
part.
Hope this helps. If any of you visits these sites or if you know the
Caput Web Chat by name and have some comments, then please give some
feed-back.
Sincerely,
Jesper Jorgensen
