There are a few open source Java APIs for connection pooling, etc. A list
can be found at:

http://www.serverpages.com/Java_Server_Pages/Java_APIs/Connection_Pooling/

I've used BitMechanic's JDBC pool on a few projects, and it has worked well
for me.
