Yeah, it often makes sense to separate the data from the view of
the data. One scenario is where you want to have multiple views of the
same data--either lots of views at once, or else different views over
time.
As an example of the first, I am on a project that develops
educational stats software, and sometimes we want to see the same data as
a pie chart, sometimes as a histogram. The different presentations have
different merits and so we don't want to build the data into the (say) pie
chart, since that would make it unavailable to the histogram.
As an example of the second, you may have a commercial site that
wants to update the view of the content from time to time, just to keep
things looking "fresh". It's easier if the view is just a separate piece
so that you don't have to muck around with the underlying model as well.
JSP is especially nice in this situation.
