I've done projects in Perl, PHP, and Java, and I'd say PHP sits half way
between the two. PHP's clean support of classes and data hiding makes it a
viable active application building language, whereas in Perl I always find
myself struggling against the limitations of the language. I think it's
unfair to PHP to lump it in with Perl - IMHO it's a far superior language
for active web building tasks.

In spite of all the technical arguments that could be marshalled - and
excepting the obvious page compile cost - I've also found PHP consistently
quicker to execute than similar code in JSP (this was on Apache under LINUX
6.0). Bizarre.

Cheers - Steve
