Well, that solution is higly dependend on the DBMS, so I wouldn't recommend
it.
A better alternative is to look at the DatabaseMetaData class.
something like
DatabaseMetaData dbmd = conn.getDatabaseMetaData();
ResultSet tables = dbmd.getTables("","","%","TABLE");
