Yes it would be better! "...remain on the list"??? In case you haven't
noticed this is a mailing list... not a news forum! What are you going
to do? Send out an e-mail to the list instructing everybody delete that
particular letter? Once it's on the list, it's there for good! Nothing
you can do about it... and it certainly won't help flaming the guy for
asking the question and bringing down an avalanche of flames on you for
flaming that guy and so on. If a person asks a silly or off topic
question it's most likely because he/she is a newbie... by that I don't
mean a newbie to JSP or whatever it is he/she is asking about but to
mailing lists! They go and search for "Java mailing list" on the web
and what do they find?? Java (Server Pages) mailing list! So have the
decency to shut up or help the people without insulting them or everyone
else on this list with your intolerance! I'm sure all those people who
share your oppinion are bright enough to realize that you can delete the
letter with one simple click... And one other thing about your reply.
Connecting to a MSSQL database FROM A JSP IS a JSP topic!!!
>I want the list to be productive for me as well as for the newbies.
That's
>why I'm pointing them to the correct forums, as well as providing
answers.
So do that... I have no problem with that... just do it in a civilized
manner! Answer the question (that part is optional) and/or point them
in the right direction by telling them about the appropriate mailing
list or forum.
One last thing. If you follow these pointers above (answer then
politely redirect them to another mailing list) following "stupid
newbies" will see your answer on the archives and read it. Then what
happens is that they write down the name of the list and in the case of
another bump they ask their question on that list. If, however, you
decide to flame the guy who asked the question, nobody will care to read
that reply since it doesn't appear to have any constructive information
(at first).
Kind Regards,
Stefan Freyr
p.s. if your five year old is already posting questions on news forums
AND even knows where to post them... I'd seriously consider summer camp!
