I've been working on this for my site for the past two years and have gotten pretty good results.Simply getting a good placement isn't enough-- you have to get good placement on the right keywords, which means you have to track conversion rates, i.e. which keywords resulted in the desired behavior. I've been using www.traceworks.com but would switch if something else was available (it only works with IE) You maximize the number of actual conversions by taking into account both the conversion rate of the search term, and the frequency. More general search terms have a higher frequency, but lower conversion rates, while more specific search terms have a higher conversion rate, but lower frequency.

I recommend WebPosition Gold simply to keep track of your position under the various keywords. Its Windows-only, but you have to make some sacrifices :-(

I just gave a talk to a marketing class at NC State last month on the subject. My site www.webperformanceinc.com has been either 1st or 2nd for the main keywords for most of the last couple of years, but just dropped to 4th on the most popular keyword as a result of my messing around with the front page to try and bolster the 3rd and 4th most important keywords :-(
