I was thinking that a small study group on a specific subject would have
discussions that would not be of interest to the group as a whole
(logistics,  syllabus etc.)and would only be in existence for a short
amount of time it would be appropriate to have a smaller distribution. 
Also, one of the points that was made at the NoFluffJustStuff Symposium
is that experienced java developers have a tendency to be arrogant
condescending toward less experienced java programmers and that if we
want to see java continue to flourish, we need to be more supportive of
people coming up the learning curve.  So with that intent, I thought
that on a smaller distribution, where everyone is in the same boat of
learning a new technology, people would be more willing to ask questions
and share ideas.
