If anyone is interested in joining a Study Group focused on gaining Sun Certified Java Programmer status, please let me know.

Thank you,
   Harold Meder.

This email is targeted at those who feel that adding a certification to their resume might help and are serious about putting in the effort, between now and August, required to succeed.

This email is not meant to start another dialog regarding the merits of gaining certifications.

Subject: May 21 meeting for SCJP study group

All,

We are starting a group focused on getting Sun Certified Java Programmer status.  This is a difficult exam, so you’re going to have to study to pass, even if you are an expert in Java.  The exam is a stickler for detail that some programmers (read Steve Agather) wouldn’t concern themselves with.  Many of the questions revolve around issues that some programmers (insert name as above) rely on the javac compiler to warn them about.  Our development tools have become so good that many of the intricacies of Java are handled for us, and we’ve lost understanding some of the finer details of the language.  Knowing this, however, we can gear our study towards learning the subtler aspects of Java.  Regardless of whether or not you want certification, we will be learning Java in depth, so please feel free to join the group.  Actual desire to take the exam is not required.

For the May 21st meeting, please get a copy of Mughal’s book.  Read the first two chapters and do all review questions in each chapter.  Do the programming exercise at the end of chapter 2 (it’s a quick one – does not even require actual coding).  You can look at the answers in the appendix.  Do not look at the sample exam at the back of the book.  Leave this until we’ve covered the entire book.  For the review questions, annotate any you have difficulty with.  We need to cover these in our meetings.  The key is to understand what we’re missing during the practice tests.

Bring your books, notes, questions and comments to the meeting.  Hope to see you there.

Steve
