Research Triangle Park Rational Users Group Kick-Off Meeting

Day/Date: Wednesday. May 26

Topic:
Introduction to the RUP: The Process

Andrew Midkiff, Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina

Abstract:

Introduction to the RUP: The Process

The Rational Unified Process is first and foremost a methodological framework for creating an efficient and effective software development process. Rational, as well as others, have created a diverse toolset to support RUP-based development efforts, but the tools are not the process. It is quite possible to use the process without the tools. It is actually recommended by the authors of the RUP to eschew the tools, at least at first, until you understand the process itself. The Rational tools are often used outside of the RUP, but by understanding the core values and best practices that lie at its heart, you are more likely to better understand why the tools work the way they do.

This talk will try and briefly introduce some of the main concepts of the Rational Unified Process. These include.
- The Three Core Values of RUP
- The Six Best Practices of RUP
- Phases and Iterations
- Workflows

Much can be and has been written and said about each one of these topics, so this will only be a high-level overview. The intention is to begin to introduce concepts and vocabulary that will hopefully come up in future talks, and perhaps to encourage you to learn more on your own about the Process.

Speaker Bio

Andrew Midkiff has been working within agile environments for much of his career in software development. Andrew's appreciation for the ease, effectiveness and sheer pleasure of iterative development has grown through working on projects small to multinational, in environments ranging from some of the more radical forms of XP (Extreme Programming) to more orthodox RUP all the way to the more common Utter Chaos. He is currently working at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, officially as a Senior Business Analyst, and slightly-less-officially as the resident RUP Evangelist and Development Methodologist. As a fair warning, it is dangerous to get him started talking about agile development, XP, RUP, the proper way to do business analysis, or the reasons behind the importance of Jade and Bronze to the Ancient Chinese. Remember, you've been warned!
