After shaking google for a while, rmiproxy.com fell out. The problem with it is that it requires modification of both sides of
the RMI to work.

You could also do RMI/HTTP...if its just firewall stuff.

Maybe this isn't workable? I sure wish I had a few days to put into digging deeper into RMI, as my knowledge of RMI is fairly
limited as well. It just seems like someone else would have
hit this problem and solved it in a transparent manner. Surely
I can't be the only person to want this, which makes me think it
might not be possible/feasible... :-\

No...the common case is for hardware/network management. I thought it was weird the first time. However, using appserver type stuff in front of hardware/network management is becomming quite common. I just came from a place up north not to long ago doing a complete "whole network" topology management including mainframes, etc. If a section goes down, the dependent systems and backups are started and you can drag/drop network topoolgy to boot. However, config changes and monitoring are tied to particular appservers in some cases due to hardware/software constraints. If I say "configureDeviceCommunication(pointA,pointB)" and point B is connected to a different server...it should be automagic.... Thats what you can do with the interceptors...

 Into the mire!

Thanks.
