Hello Taggers:

There is quite a bit going on with Tri-XML. The conference is coming
up. If you have been to meetings lately, you know we've had a long run
of great speakers (for those of you who have not attended, past
presentations may be downloaded from the Tri-XML "Past Meetings"
webpage). If you wish to see what presentations are coming beyond April,
please visit: http://www.trixml.org/futuremeetings.shtml .

APRIL MEETING INFORMATION

SPEAKER: Mitch Amiano, Agile Markup Corporation

TOPIC: Scripting XML With Java and Python

TOPIC DESCRIPTION: A plethora of open source Java tools and their class
libraries exist for XML, but what if you need to extend the
functionality and customize if for specific applications? One option is
to code up additional Java classes, but not everyone is into Java
development. It would be great to get access to the power of the Java
classes, but work with scripts instead. You can do this with an
alternative JVM language such as Jython. The presentation will show how
you can glue together a desktop XML application from existing Java
components using Jython as the glue.

DATE: Tuesday, April 12, 2005

TIME: 6:00pm - 8:00pm (includes time for eating and networking)

FOLLOW UP TO PRESENTATION BY JONANTHAN ROBIE (MARCH)

At XML 2004, I had the opportunity to attend an "EGGS and XML"
presentation by DataDirect Technologies. Jonathan Robie gave an
engaging presentation on XQuery, XML, and Databases. Following the
conference, I asked if Jonathan could present this same overview for
Tri-XML and was glad to have him accept. The presentation was
fantastic, and I was glad for the opportunity to hear it again. There
were some good discussions and questions from the audience. (Jonathan,
next time we'll put name tags on our audience. :-)

If you missed Jonathan Robie's presentation, here are comments from
attendees that you might be interested in reading.

>From John Fitzpatrick: "As far as Jonathan Robie's presentation, I found
it very well done by an especially good presenter. He brings not only
the developer's perspective to the audience but the tempered experience
of participating in standards work. I enjoyed it very much and hope we
can have him back for more in the future."

>From Conrad D'Cruz: "Jonathan Robie's presentation was perfect. It was
a very comprehensive overview of the standards and tools as well as
future directions."

NEW DITA SUB-GROUP IN TRI-XML

In addition to the regular Tri-XML monthly meetings, which cover a range
of xml uses/topics, we've had interest expressed in holding some
DITA-specific events. To avoid taking away from the regular Tri-XML
meetings, or making us too focused on one topic, we are going to hold a
couple of DITA luncheons in addition to the monthly meetings -- kind of
like a mini group within our user group.

If you are interested in DITA, let me know. We've already got an IBM
expert interested in providing a DITA educational presentation and
overseeing discussions...this new mini user group for DITA will probably
start meeting in June. While these will be at lunchtimes, our Tri-XML
monthly meetings will continue to be held in the evenings (loosely the
2nd Tuesday of each month).

WANTED: People interested in doing peer presentations this Fall. Call
me if you have a topic you'd like to propose. Topics need to directly
involve XML. Mmonthly meeting presentations are peer presentations and
vendor/marketing presentations are not permitted. Please do consider
volunteering to share your knowledge...You've got many months to work on
your presentation if you sign on now for a fall meeting. :-)

Take care,

Kay
