this looks like a convention to me, and julia decided to follow the R 
convention

(R actually follows the Stata convention in: lm(mydataframe))

one thing where i do find Stata superior is the possibility to use wild 
cards in formulas (including factors and interactions) 

it would be nice if julia's formula interface would allow for that as well
