As far as I can tell the only advantage of a traditional forum format over
the web interface to the mailing lists (
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/julia-users) is the sort of
category breakdown you mention. For me though, the extra organization isn't
typically that useful, and there is already some high-level split up
between the julia lists (julia-dev, julia-users, julia-stats, etc.) Between
the existing lists and GitHub issues discussions, I don't think I'd be a
fan of adding additional places to discuss (and search for previous
information).
