That’s probably because *(1,1) is applying the *function* * to the arguments 1,1, rather than doing something on a tuple (1,1).It *is* possible to do this with the arguments coming from a tuple via splatting, e.g. *(t...), but I get the feeling that this might not be what you’re after.
