It wasn't Julia, I accidentally did brew matplotlib
Which suggested a tap, which I installed. This had problems with surf, so I then did easy_install pip, pip matplotlib which seemed to conflict with the brewed one. So the solution was delete /usr/local and also delete site-packages in /Library/....python.... Starting from scratch, the attached instructions seemed to work well.
