I'm not necessarily saying google groups is fundamentally bad for discussion, e.g. if you set up a daily digest and such, just that for most people here it's not the expectation. For the most part every email you send to -users ends up in the inbox of every Julia dev and many more in the community. That's a great set up for getting fast feedback and help from the right person, but it's much less convenient when there's a lot of back-and-forth between a subset of users.
But I take your point – we could use more guidelines about what the expectations actually are, as well as alternatives for people who want to have those kinds of discussions.
