Okay, the problem was that Ubuntu julia was version 4.1, properly installed, while Debian was 4.0 with directories in nonestandard places.
Downloading & extracting the 4.1 binary to my home directory, running it from there as: julia-cbe1bee3a8/bin/julia newbox.jl works fine.
