Another thing to consider is that OpenJUMP is a very graphics intensive program and the performance gains may be worth the requirement for the newer JRE. I Note: I do want to make sure we don't "upgrade" ourselves out of the JRE available on most Linux distributions. This isn't as much of a problem as it once was, since Java now uses a license that doesn't offend the folks at Debian. I believe 1.6 is availalbe in the Debian "non-free" package repository, but I would have to double check.
