Another thing to consider is that OpenJUMP is a very graphics
intensive program and the performance gains may be worth the
requirement for the newer JRE. I

Note: I do want to make sure we don't "upgrade" ourselves out of the
JRE available on most Linux distributions. This isn't as much of a
problem as it once was, since Java now uses a license that doesn't
offend the folks at Debian. I believe 1.6 is availalbe in the Debian
"non-free" package repository, but I would have to double check.

What reasons would there be for avoiding the installation of a new JRE?

P.S. - I believe UDig and some others actually install a JRE with
their program. Not that I am a big fan of that idea.
