After looking over the literature, I don't see a cross-platform solution
that wouldn't add to the potential problem.  I'm concerned that it might
incorrectly stop JUMP from running when it was actually possible, due to
variations in the platform and JVM.

If it makes it as far as displaying the splash screen before lockup, we
could simply add the text "Java version 1.5 or higher required" to the
splash screen.  That way when it locks up, at least the user is looking at a
possible solution.
