Eric, Have a look at the SpringLayout manager from Swing. This is a very flexible layout manager. There is a SwingUtilities class that will allow you to make a basic grid layout in the JUMP code base.
Unless there is something needed in a 3rd party GUI library try and stick with standard Swing components. Otherwise we'll end up with having a bloated download with all the 3rd party libraries.
