If you want an automagically universal unique ID, you can use a UUID stored inside a suitable char field. You'll surely find some Java util to create it. It's not as small and performant as an integer, but it's guaranteed to be unique. A simple integer qith it's 2^31 upper limit, may not be enough anyway...
