Hi Larry,
You have created a wonderful tool. It takes just a second to learn (perhaps
ten seconds to teach somebody) how to use it, including the unique possibility
of selecting two separate linestrings, digitize the section in between them and
join them all to one. Congratulations.

I fixed an Java 1.5 incompatibility and added support to for extending
multiple selected LineStrings or joining two with a connection.

I have committed the changes to DrawLineStringTool that add
support for extending the selected LineString. It took me longer than I
thought. I must be out of practice for cursor tools. :-( Please test
tomorrows build to see if it works as expected.

I think it would be sufficient. Only thing that may go
wrong is that if snapping to vertices is not selected from options then the
points won't necessarily match. It would be fine it user could see somehow
immediately after setting the first new vertex if the linestrings will be
merged or not.
Best user interface I have ever seen for extending
linestrings is in the OpenStreetMap Potlatch editor. It offers also a pretty
simple way to insert and drag new vertices into existing line segments, merge
existing linestrings and a few more. Editor can be found at
http://openstreetmap.org. It starts by pressing the Edit tab, but you need to
create user account first. Or you can read this introduction:
