Hi edgar,

Congratulations,
I've been on this problem for hours, but had not done significative progress.

There is also a font in windows installation called Gautami which seems to do the work :
(though I can't check it's really telugu language)

Curiously, Gautami file seems to be known by java (list as an available font) but not use until you put it in JRE_HOME/lib/fonts/fallback.

ok, iguess i have isolated the issue here.

java does not seem to support certain parts of unicode e.g. telugu out of the box. to work aoud it some modification is to be done to the jre installed. see

http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.5.0/docs/guide/intl/fontconfig.html

but an even easier option is to put a capable font into a to be created

JRE_HOME/lib/fonts/fallback

folder. for example

http://sourceforge.net/projects/code2000/files/

or commercial alternatives like Arial Unicode MS or
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Bitstream_Cyberbit

@ravi: please try the workaround and complete your translation. i'll work inbetween on a solution where openjump automagically decides to stay with the fonts java uses or switches to another one supporting the charset.

i move this to the developer list as it really seems to be a bug somewhere.

under windows with all asian languages support installed the attached file only sports telugu characters in window title bars (which as far as i know are rendered by windows). all other telugu translations end up as the infamous boxes.

my guess is that telugu is for some reason excluded from the unicode rendering in the default jre/jsdk font assignment.

does anybody have an idea?

Edgar,
I tried to also save it in UTF-8 as it worked for Chinese.
But failed.
Attaching the properties file for debugging.

All the Menus on OJ first screen show rectangles..
BUT
the input (separate) windows show Telugu script correctly

Ex: Window for Save Data Set As, shows correctly.
